Autumn with Children

I recently enjoyed the experience of watching middle schoolers explore the joys of autumn during an outdoor education trip. The weather was nice so we sat outside, under the trees with clipboards.  A creek babbled behind us while the smell of damp grass tickled our noses.

It was still warm enough for some of my students to take off their shoes and put their feet in the creek.  In the spirit of adventure, others rolled down a grassy hill.  The boys wrote poems about tracking deer during hunting season. One young man wrote about the end of baseball season and the beginning of soccer season.  The girl’s topics included pumpkin lattes and reading by the fire.

The Autumn Season

For me, autumn means planning lessons for school and grading papers, but I must not forget that it is also a chance for adventure and discovery.  The grass sleeps, while leaves blaze against the sky and carpet the ground with color.  Cooler air allows for longer outdoor walks.  It is a time to teach kids how to use the shell of an acorn to make a whistle and a chance to build forts with fallen branches or run through crunching colorful leaves. As animals prepare for winter, we celebrate the harvest and gather for Thanksgiving.

What does Autumn Mean to You?

I’ve created a free fall-themed poetry activity to help your family explore these ideas together. It includes a scavenger hunt, poetry frames, and simple directions to spark creativity.  I hope you enjoy thinking and writing about it!
